Thessaloniki was founded around 315 BC by Cassander, who named it after his wife — Alexander the Great's half-sister — and rapidly developed it into the dominant city of Macedonia. By the time issues of this type were being struck, the city had already survived the collapse of the Antigonid kingdom and was adapting to Roman provincial administration following the defeat of Perseus at Pydna in 168 BC.
The SNG Copenhagen 350 reference places this firmly within the autonomous civic bronze series Thessaloniki maintained under Roman oversight.
