Uzbekistan's state printing works, operating under the name GPO Davlat Belgisi, has produced the country's banknotes domestically since the mid-1990s — a deliberate policy choice following independence, when reliance on foreign printers was seen as a vulnerability. The 20,000 so'm denomination sits near the top of a series that has been repeatedly outpaced by inflation; when the so'm was redenominated in 2017 at a rate of 1,000 old to 1 new, notes of this face value became necessary within just a few years of that reform.
The watermark remains the primary security feature listed for this issue — modest by regional standards.
