Part of the 2016 NKRI series — "Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia" — issued to mark the 71st anniversary of Indonesian independence, this entire denomination set was redesigned simultaneously and released on 19 August 2016, a coordinated reissue unusual in its scope for a sitting central bank not facing a monetary crisis.
Perum Peruri, the state-owned security printer operating out of Karawang in West Java, has held the monopoly on Indonesian banknote production since 1971. The colour-shifting ink and windowed security thread reflect upgrades specifically introduced with this 2016 series, responding to increasingly sophisticated counterfeiting pressure across Southeast Asia.
