| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of Emperor Pedro II occupies the central field, rendered in high relief with fine portraiture detail. The date appears above the effigy, with the divided Latin imperial legend flanking the bust: PETRUS II.D.G.C.IMP. to the left and ET PERP.BRAS.DEF. to the right. The inscription is an abbreviation of Petrus Secundus Dei Gratia Constitutionalis Imperator et Perpetuus Brasiliæ Defensor, identifying the emperor by divine right and constitutional title. The portrait is characteristic of the engraving style of Carlos Custódio de Azevedo, with careful attention to the imperial vestments. |
