| Additional information |
The carriel is a leather satchel historically carried by the arrieros — the muleteers who drove mule trains through the Andes connecting Colombia's interior regions before road infrastructure existed. These traders were so central to Antioquian economic and cultural identity that the carriel became a regional emblem, eventually earning formal recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Colombia. This coin continues a Banco de la República series dedicating the 20,000-peso denomination to objects of Colombian cultural patrimony.
