Obverse description Draped bust of King Juan Carlos I facing three-quarters right, rendered in high relief with fine portraiture detail, set within a raised inner circle. The peripheral legend arcs around the upper field reading JUAN CARLOS I REY DE ESPAÑA, while the date 1990 appears in the lower field below the inner circle, flanked by two small dots. The portrait captures the king in contemporary civilian dress with a tie, engraved by Rafael Vallejo García.

Additional information

This issue belongs to a Spanish commemorative gold series tied to the 1992 events — the Barcelona Olympics, the Seville Expo, and the quincentenary of Columbus's voyage — which together prompted one of the most ambitious Spanish minting programs of the late twentieth century. The Sagrada Família piece appeared two years ahead of those events as part of the advance series, with production quantities kept deliberately limited to sustain collector demand across the full run.

Gaudí's basilica remained — and still remains — unfinished at time of issue, still funded largely through admissions and private donations rather than state funds.
