This issue commemorates Martín Alonso Pinzón, captain of the Pinta during Columbus's 1492 voyage, as part of Spain's extended coinage program building toward the 1992 Quincentenary of the Discovery of America. The series ran across several years and denominations, with the 20,000 peseta gold pieces targeting collector markets rather than circulation. Pinzón died just weeks after returning to Spain in 1493, reportedly from illness contracted during the voyage, and never received the recognition afforded to Columbus.
