| Reverse description | The reverse is printed entirely in the same ochre-amber tone as the underprint on the obverse, with no additional colour. Wanne was an industrial municipality in the Ruhr, and its notgeld issues from 1923 came directly out of the hyperinflation crisis triggered in part by the Franco-Belgian occupation of the Ruhr that January. Local authorities, unable to obtain adequate quantities of Reichsbank currency, were authorized — and in many cases simply compelled by necessity — to print their own emergency denominations. The 20,000 Mark figure, which would have seemed astronomical even two years earlier, was already losing purchasing power within weeks of issue.
Wanne merged with Eickel in 1926 to form Wanne-Eickel, erasing the issuing authority from the map entirely.
