Henschel & Sohn is best known as the Kassel locomotive manufacturer, but this note was issued by a separate entity — the Henrichshütte division, an iron and steelworks in Hattingen on the Ruhr. During the hyperinflation of 1923, industrial firms across the Ruhr issued their own emergency currency (Notgeld) partly out of necessity and partly because the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to meet payroll demands in depreciating marks.
W. Girardet in Essen was a prolific printer of industrial Notgeld throughout the crisis, handling output for numerous Ruhr-area firms simultaneously.
