Turkey's inclusion in the Barcelona Olympics commemorative program reflected the country's active push in the early 1990s to position itself within European cultural and sporting institutions — a period when Ankara was simultaneously pursuing closer ties with the EC. The coin was struck in sterling silver at the Turkish State Mint in Istanbul, one of several Olympic-themed issues the mint produced that year for the collector market rather than circulation.
