Obverse description At center, the heraldic emblem of the Bulgarian National Bank is depicted in high relief, featuring a quartered shield supported by two rampant lions facing inward, with a foliate motif at the base of the escutcheon. A curved ribbon scroll beneath the supporters bears the dates 1879-1999, commemorating the bank's founding and anniversary year. The Cyrillic legend БЪЛГАРСКА НАРОДНА is arranged in a concave arc across the upper field, while БАНКА appears in the lower field. The mirrored proof fields provide a sharp contrast to the frosted device, characteristic of high-quality Bulgarian Mint production.

Additional information

Bulgaria's 1999 gold issues arrived during one of the country's worst modern financial crises. The 1996–97 banking collapse wiped out savings across the country, triggered hyperinflation exceeding 1000% annually, and forced the introduction of a currency board in July 1997 that pegged the lev to the Deutsche Mark. The 20,000 leva denomination reflects the pre-redenomination scale — on July 5, 1999, Bulgaria replaced the old lev at 1000:1, rendering this face value equivalent to 20 new leva the moment it left the mint.
