Chad's 1970 independence commemorative series was issued to mark the tenth anniversary of the country's separation from French Equatorial Africa, commissioned through the Paris Mint at a moment when President François Tombalbaye's government was actively courting international legitimacy while simultaneously suppressing the FROLINAT rebellion in the north. The 20 000 Francs sits at the top of a multi-denomination gold set, and the entire program was produced in extremely limited quantities — the majority purchased by foreign collectors and institutions rather than circulating domestically in any meaningful sense.
The Paris Mint's .900 fine gold specification follows the same standard used for French metropolitan commemoratives of the period.
