Issued under Hugo Chávez's government as part of a commemorative medallic series celebrating Venezuelan cities and infrastructure, this piece marks the port of Maracay — though Maracay is notably an inland city in Aragua state, better known as a military garrison hub than any maritime center. The nominal denomination of 20,000 bolívares was largely symbolic; by 2001, Venezuela's currency had already suffered years of devaluation following the 1994 banking crisis that wiped out roughly half the country's financial institutions.
