Burscheid's shoe industry was substantial enough in 1923 that individual factory owners issued their own emergency currency — Frankenstein's Schuhfabrik was one of several local firms that stepped in when Reichsbank notes simply could not keep pace with hyperinflation's daily devaluations. The 20-million-mark denomination places this firmly in the late summer to early autumn of 1923, the most acute phase, when denominations climbed by orders of magnitude week to week.
Printed locally by Herm. Claas, a Burscheid printer with no particular banknote pedigree — which shows in the workmanship. Notgeld of this type was typically redeemable only at the issuing firm, making it scrip in all but name.
