Meerane was a textile manufacturing town in the Erzgebirge foothills, and like hundreds of German municipalities in the late summer and autumn of 1923, its city council was forced into emergency currency issuance simply because the Reichsbank could not print and ship denominations fast enough to keep pace with hyperinflation. The 20,000,000 Mark face value places this note squarely in the August–September 1923 window, when that sum briefly represented a day's wages before becoming effectively worthless within weeks.
Local Notgeld at this scale was printed on whatever commercial presses were available in town — in Meerane's case, its established printing trade served the textile industry with labels and trade documents, and those same shops absorbed municipal currency contracts during the crisis.
