Bergisch Gladbach's 20-million-mark note dates from the absolute peak of the German hyperinflation spiral — by late 1923, municipal and regional authorities across the Reich were issuing their own emergency currency (Notgeld) simply because the Reichsbank could not print or distribute legal tender fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. Cities, towns, railway companies, and private firms all became de facto currency issuers.
Heiss & Co. in Köln-Lindenthal handled a considerable volume of this municipal printing work for the Rhineland region. The 20-million-mark denomination, which would have seemed almost incomprehensibly large in 1921, was already insufficient for many daily transactions by the time this note reached circulation.
