This note belongs to the vast German Notgeld inflation emergency of 1923, when regional and municipal authorities across the Rhine Province were authorized to issue their own currency after the Reichsbank could no longer supply denominations fast enough to keep pace with hyperinflation. The consortium of six Prussian Kreise — Düren, Euskirchen, Jülich, Schleiden, Stolberg, and Eschweiler — pooled their issuing authority, which was administratively unusual; most Notgeld came from single municipalities or individual firms rather than multi-district coalitions.
By the time twenty-million-mark denominations were necessary, the note's face value was already obsolete within weeks of printing.
