Reverse description The reverse is printed in brown and ochre-yellow on cream paper, centred on a large oval vignette rendered in a fine etching style depicting a panoramic townscape with a prominent multi-towered cathedral — identifiable as Speyer Cathedral — set against radiating linear sunburst lines. The oval is encircled by a dotted border carrying the patriotic motto 'IN HOFFENDER NOT VERBUNDEN SIND HEIMAT VOLK UND REICH', with the four corner ribbon banners again bearing '20 MILLIONEN MARK' as on the obverse.

Comments

Issued in August or September 1923 at the absolute peak of Weimar hyperinflation, this twenty-million mark note from the Kreisgemeinde Pfalz is Notgeld in its most desperate form — regional emergency currency printed because the Reichsbank simply could not produce and distribute legal tender fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. Within weeks of issue, twenty million marks was effectively worthless pocket change.

Hart & Wein were a Ludwigshafen-based printing firm, locally sourced for obvious logistical reasons. The Palatinate district administration had little choice but to use whatever printer was at hand.
