Aachen's municipal emergency currency from the hyperinflation peak of 1923 places this note squarely in the Notgeld tradition, but the Stadt- und Landkreis designation is worth noting — it reflects the administrative merger of the city and surrounding district authority, both issuing under a single guarantee at a moment when the Reichsbank had effectively lost control of the money supply. By the time denominations reached the eight-figure range, notes were often obsolete within days of printing.
The watermark is unusual for municipal Notgeld of this period, most of which relied on overprinting or serial numbering alone. Its presence suggests the issuer sourced security paper rather than improvising on commercial stock.
