Four small Black Forest towns — Haslach, Hausach, Schiltach, and Wolfach — pooled resources to issue this note during the catastrophic hyperinflation of late 1923, when the Reichsbank could not supply currency fast enough to meet daily demand. Joint municipal issues of this kind were common in the Kinzig valley that autumn, a practical workaround by communities too small to manage independent Notgeld programs at scale.
Twenty billion marks. By the time notes of this denomination were in circulation, a single loaf of bread in Germany cost several times that amount.
