| Obverse description | Plain cream paper note of cheque-like format, printed in black letterpress throughout. At the upper left a prefix letter block and serial number are set alongside the denomination numeral '20 000 000 000' at upper right. A lightly printed green underprint vignette — a crowned heraldic device — occupies the centre field. The issuing institution name 'Die Girokasse Bad Elster' is set in bold Gothic script, followed by a payment order text referencing account number 7; the crossed-out alternative 'NUR ZUR VERRECHNUNG' clause appears in large capitals, with the bearer clause 'oder Überbringer' to the right. Bad Elster was a spa town in Saxony whose municipal bath administration — the Badedirektion — issued emergency currency during the hyperinflation peak of late 1923, when the Reichsbank could not supply denominations large enough to cover basic transactions. The Girokasse functioned as a local clearing institution tied to the spa's operations, an unusual arrangement that made it one of the more obscure notgeld issuers of the period.
Twenty billion marks. By October 1923, that sum was barely enough for a tram fare in most German cities.
