Brombach bei Lörrach issued this 20 billion Mark note at the absolute peak of Weimar hyperinflation in late 1923 — a period when municipal governments across Baden and the rest of Germany were legally compelled to print their own emergency currency simply to meet payroll and keep local commerce moving. The Reichsbank could not supply physical notes fast enough to match the daily collapse in purchasing power.
Gemeinde-level Notgeld at denominations this high was rarely saved. It was spent the same day it was issued, sometimes within hours.
