Additional information

Zamość held out against French forces during the 1813 campaign longer than virtually any other fortified city in the region, and its commandant, General Maurycy Hauke, authorized emergency coinage to pay the garrison when conventional supply lines collapsed. The heavier type distinguished here from the lighter emergency strikes reflects a deliberate attempt to maintain credibility with soldiers who had every reason to distrust ad hoc military scrip.

The siege lasted until December 1813, making this one of the last Napoleonic-era siege coinages struck in Polish territory before the final collapse of the Duchy of Warsaw.
