Poland's "History and Culture of Polish Regions" series, of which this piece is part, ran for years and covered every voivodeship in the country. Podlaskie, in the northeast, is one of Poland's most ethnically and religiously mixed regions — historically home to Polish, Belarusian, Ukrainian, Jewish, and Tatar communities, a density of minorities unusual even by Central European standards. The Białowieża Forest, which straddles the Polish-Belarusian border within Podlaskie, is the last primeval lowland forest in Europe and home to the reintroduced European bison, nearly extinct by 1919.
