Part of Poland's long-running Nordic gold animal series, this issue documents the grey seal at a moment of genuine ecological recovery — Baltic populations had collapsed under Soviet-era hunting and industrial pollution, and conservation efforts beginning in the 1980s were only starting to show measurable results by the mid-2000s. The species breeds on Polish Baltic coastline around the Hel Peninsula, though established colonies remain small.
