Sosabowski commanded the Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade at Arnhem in September 1944, where he repeatedly warned Allied planners that Market Garden was compromised before a single man jumped. He was proven right, and the operation collapsed. The British high command, seeking to deflect blame, had him removed from command in December 1944 under Dutch pressure — a decision that effectively ended his military career. He died in London in 1967, largely unrecognized by the country whose soldiers he had led.
The Dutch government awarded him the Bronze Lion posthumously in 2006, two years after this coin was issued.
