The Battle of Warsaw in August 1920 — sometimes called the "Miracle on the Vistula" — halted the westward advance of Bolshevik forces under Tukhachevsky at a moment when much of Western Europe assumed Poland would fall. Polish commander Józef Piłsudski's flanking maneuver through the Wieprz River corridor caught the Red Army overextended and shattered three Soviet armies within days. Many historians argue the outcome prevented Soviet expansion into Central Europe by at least a generation.
This coin is part of NBP's long-running Nordic gold commemorative series marking significant events in Polish military history. The alloy choice — copper-aluminum-zinc — mimics gold's appearance without the cost, a practical decision that kept these issues in nominal circulation denomination.
