Ramon Perellos y Roccaful served as Grand Master from 1697 to 1720 — a reign long enough to see substantial gold coinage struck, but the Order's mint on Malta was never a high-volume operation. The zecchino denomination was modeled directly on the Venetian ducat, a deliberate choice reflecting the currency's primary function in Mediterranean trade and ransoming operations rather than domestic circulation.
Perellos navigated the aftermath of the Great Siege's long shadow while also managing the Order's financial entanglements with Louis XIV's France. His reign coincided with the War of the Spanish Succession, which disrupted the Order's revenue streams from European commanderies significantly.
