Prison-issued scrip in the People's Republic of China functioned as a controlled internal currency — inmates received it as compensation for labor and could spend it only within the facility's canteen or commissary system, preventing the accumulation of regular renminbi behind bars. The Guizhou Province Second Prison (贵州省第二监狱) operated under the laogai system, and its scrip issues from the early 1960s are among the more obscure survivals of that network's internal economy.

1963 places this note squarely in the aftermath of the Great Leap Forward's economic collapse, when even prison enterprise output was being pressed into national recovery targets. Few examples of facility-level scrip from this period made it outside institutional archives.
