| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a large ornate rectangular cartouche rendered in bold Nasta'liq calligraphy, containing the mint name and the phrase 'Zarb Dar al-Saltanah Tehran' (struck in the seat of sovereignty, Tehran). The cartouche is flanked on both sides by decorative foliate scroll ornaments and surmounted by an arched mihrab-like finial bearing a small Arabic inscription. The AH date 1209 appears in a subsidiary cartouche at the base of the central panel. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border characteristic of late Zand and early Qajar hammered coinage. |
