| Obverse description | King Leo I enthroned facing, crowned and robed, seated on a lion-headed throne, holding a fleur-de-lis sceptre in his right hand and an orb or lily in his left. The throne is flanked by lion heads on the armrests, rendered in a stylised Byzantine-influenced manner. A beaded inner circle separates the central effigy from the surrounding Armenian legend in the outer field. |

| Reverse description | A crowned lion passant to the right, head turned to face the viewer, its right forepaw raised and grasping a tall Patriarchal (double-barred) cross. A cinquefoil ornament appears to the left of the lion, and a similar decorative motif is placed between the cross staff and the lion's raised tail. The design is enclosed within a beaded border, with the Armenian legend distributed around the circumference of the field. |
