This piece belongs to a pattern series struck during Naser al-Din Shah's long reign — the longest of any Qajar ruler at nearly fifty years. Pattern coinage of this period was frequently produced in Paris at the Monnaie de Paris, which held contracts for Persian dies and trial strikes through much of the latter nineteenth century. Whether this specific piece was intended to test a new weight standard or simply a revised design is not always recoverable from the documentary record.
The .900 fineness aligns with reforms pushed partly by European trading pressure to bring Persian gold into conformity with continental standards.
