Additional information

Tự Đức reigned longer than any other Nguyễn emperor, but his reign was one of almost unrelenting crisis — French naval forces seized Đà Nẵng in 1858, Saigon fell in 1859, and by 1862 the Treaty of Saigon had ceded three southern provinces outright. Silver coinage from this period was minted at Huế under increasingly strained imperial finances, with the court simultaneously funding military resistance and paying French-imposed indemnities.

The 35-year span of this type means early and late strikes can differ noticeably in execution, reflecting changing workshop conditions across a reign defined by contraction.
