Bảo Đại's reign as the last emperor of Vietnam was largely ceremonial under French Indochina's colonial administration, and the monetary system reflected that subordination — French-controlled institutions managed actual fiscal policy while imperial coinage carried the dynasty's name with little corresponding authority. The 2 Tiền denomination in gold occupies an awkward historical position: issued under a sovereign who abdicated in August 1945 at Hồ Chí Minh's request, ending the Nguyễn dynasty after 143 years.
The broad date range of 1926–1945 masks genuine rarity in later strikes, as wartime disruption to French Indochina's supply chains made gold coinage increasingly impractical after 1940.
