| Obverse description | The flat circular field is bordered by a continuous ring of raised beads. Four large Chinese characters (保大寳鑑, reading 'Bao Dai Bao Chien') are arranged in cardinal positions around a central decorative solar motif with radiating flames and a prominent central boss. Two small suspension holes are pierced at the top and bottom of the flan, indicating use as an ornamental or votive piece. The characters are rendered in bold relief in a traditional Vietnamese-Chinese calligraphic style. The overall composition is emblematic of Vietnamese imperial court craftsmanship of the Nguyen dynasty. |
