| Obverse description | Within a beaded inner circle, the crowned lion rampant of Hesse advances to the left, rendered in bold relief with claws extended and tail curling upward; the date 16-37 is divided across the field on either side of the lion's body, with the mintmaster's mark (.O.) positioned below. The surrounding peripheral legend, struck in Latin capitals, runs continuously around the coin and identifies the issuer. The overall style is characteristic of German hammered coinage of the Thirty Years' War period, with robust, high-relief die work and slightly irregular flan shape. |
