Obverse description The obverse displays the elaborate quartered arms of Landgrave Louis IV of Hesse-Marburg, surmounted by a central crown and flanked by two crowned lion supporters rampant on either side. The shield incorporates the multiple heraldic quarterings of Hesse, Katzenelnbogen, Dietz, and associated territories, rendered in fine relief in the late Renaissance style. A decorative cartouche frames the central coat of arms, with additional ornamental mantling extending toward the coin's periphery. The circular Latin legend runs along the inner border, reading the full titulature of the Landgrave and concluding with a devotional inscription identifying Herborn as the House of God and place of rest. The mint master's initials F+F appear at the base of the design.
