Obverse description Central circle defined by a twisted rope border depicts the Basel basilisk — a winged, crested dragon — standing over the Basel coat of arms shield in the lower left field. Surrounding the central circle is a broad decorative border composed of assorted heraldic shields of Swiss cantons and allied territories, interspersed with ornate scrollwork. The engraver's initials and date appear in the lower portion of the central circle.
