| Obverse description | Central field depicts the standing bear of St. Gallen passant rampant to the right, wearing a decorative collar, rendered in finely engraved detail with bold relief characteristic of early seventeenth-century Swiss hammered coinage. The bear, the civic heraldic emblem of the city, is contained within an inner beaded border. The circumferential Latin legend reads MO: NO: CIVITA: SANGALLENSIS with the date 1620 incorporated into the legend at the top, separated by small floral ornaments, all between the beaded inner circle and the plain outer rim. |

The eagle fills the inner field within a beaded border. The circumferential Latin legend, separated by star-shaped ornaments, reads SOLI DEO OPT: MAX: LAVS ET GLORIA, proclaiming praise and glory to God alone, a motto reflecting the Protestant Reformed character of the city of St. Gallen at that period. |
