Obverse description Charlemagne enthroned facing, wearing an imperial crown and robes, holding an orb in his right hand and a sceptre topped with a fleur-de-lis in his left; the date divided as 15–73 to either side of the throne. Below the emperor, the crowned shield of Aachen bearing a double-headed eagle is displayed at the base of the throne. A circular Latin legend surrounds the entire design within the border: MO REGIÆ SEDIS VRBIS AQVIS GRANI.
