| Obverse description | The central field displays the elaborate arms of the City of Cologne: a shield bearing three crowns in the lower portion and an ornate foliate base, surmounted by a large imperial crown flanked by the date divided across the upper field. Two rampant lions serve as heraldic supporters on either side of the shield, rendered in bold relief in the late Renaissance hammered style. The entire composition is encircled by a beaded border, with the Latin legend distributed around the periphery. The design reflects the civic pride and imperial authority claimed by Cologne as a free imperial city. |
