Georgia's first post-Soviet coinage was issued in 1993 following the introduction of the lari system, though economic collapse and civil conflict meant many early pieces saw almost no circulation in functional commerce. The National Bank had only been established in 1991, and the country was simultaneously managing a separatist war in Abkhazia and severe hyperinflation of the interim coupon currency the lari was designed to replace.
