The Irbis series — irbis being the Kazakh name for the snow leopard — launched as Kazakhstan's primary silver bullion program in the years following the country's aggressive push to position itself as a Central Asian financial hub. The snow leopard had already been embedded in Kazakh national symbolism well before this coinage; it appears on the emblem of Almaty and carries specific cultural weight as an animal of the Tian Shan range, not merely a generic national symbol.
The 2 Tenge face value is essentially nominal — a legal fiction that allows the coins to circulate as currency while the actual silver content drives all real-world valuation.
