Cook Islands issued this commemorative bronze piece to mark the July 1981 marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. The islands had gained self-governing status in free association with New Zealand in 1965, and by 1981 were producing an increasing volume of commemorative coinage — partly as a revenue mechanism, since philatelic and numismatic exports were becoming economically meaningful for a territory with limited other export income.
The KM#2b designation places this as a variant within the base 2 Tene circulation series, distinguished from earlier strikes by the second Raphael Maklouf-era portrait.
