| Obverse description | Quartered shield occupying the central field, displaying the arms of the Order of St. John and the personal arms of Grand Master Jean de Vallette. The upper-left and lower-right quarters bear the plain cross of the Hospitallers, while the upper-right quarter depicts a rampant lion and the lower-left quarter a running greyhound, all rendered in the bold, somewhat angular style characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century hammered coinage. The shield is divided by a prominent cross potent. The circular Latin legend surrounds the entire composition, reading F IO DE VALETA M HOSP HIERVSA, identifying the Grand Master as Fra Jean de Vallette, Master of the Hospitallers of Jerusalem. |
