| Obverse description | Central field displays the quartered heraldic shield of Grand Master Hugues Loubenx de Verdala, surmounted by a cardinal's galero with tassels and flanked by decorative mantling. The shield bears the arms of the Order of St. John — a plain cross — impaled with the personal arms of Verdala, including a lion passant. A circular Latin legend runs along the entire periphery, identifying the issuer as Fra' Hugues de Verdala, Cardinal and Master of the Hospitallers of Jerusalem. The die work is characteristic of late sixteenth-century Maltese hammered coinage, with irregular flan edges visible around the design. |
