The Sovereign Military Order of Malta occupies a peculiar legal position — a sovereign entity without territory, issuing coins that are technically legal tender yet circulate nowhere. This 1968 piece was struck as part of the FAO's "Food for All" campaign, a UN initiative that persuaded dozens of governments and issuing bodies to produce commemorative coinage with agricultural themes during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The Order's numismatic program was largely collector-oriented from the outset, which explains the survival rate.
