The Banco del Azuay was a regional bank based in Cuenca, operating under Ecuador's era of private bank note issuance that persisted until the Banco Central del Ecuador was established in 1927. Regional banks like this one issued their own circulating currency backed — at least nominally — by gold or silver reserves, though the practical enforceability of that backing varied considerably. The ABNC supplied notes to dozens of Latin American institutions during this period, often recycling plate elements between clients.
Cuenca's relative isolation from the coast meant these notes circulated in a fairly contained geographic zone. Whether redemption obligations were consistently met in the later years of the issue window is not well documented.
