Christian V had not yet taken the throne when his father Frederik III made the political calculation that would define Danish kingship for two centuries: the 1660 coup that abolished elective monarchy and established hereditary absolutism, stripping the nobility of their constitutional veto. This 1670 issue falls in Christian V's accession year, making it among the earliest coinage struck under his own authority rather than his father's — a reign that would later produce the landmark Danske Lov of 1683, the first comprehensive national legal code in Scandinavian history.
The 2 Speciedaler denomination required nearly 58 grams of high-grade silver, placing it firmly in the presentation and trade tier rather than everyday commerce.
