| Obverse description | Crowned and armored bust of Philip IV of Spain facing right, wearing a large ruffled lace collar and richly detailed cuirass, set within a beaded inner circle. The king's portrait is rendered in the high-relief Baroque style characteristic of Spanish Netherlands coinage of the mid-seventeenth century. The Latin legend encircles the effigy, interrupted at the top by the date divided on either side of a fleur-de-lis mintmark. The legend reads PHIL · IIII · D · G · HISP · ET · INDIAR · REX, identifying Philip IV as King of the Spains and the Indies by the grace of God. |
