Alderney has issued commemorative gold under its own authority since the 1990s, though the coins are legal tender of the Bailiwick of Guernsey in practice. The 95th birthday issue appeared in 2021, the same year the Queen celebrated the milestone without the Duke of Edinburgh, who died in April of that year — a fact that would have been felt acutely on an island whose occupation by German forces during World War II made the Royal Family's symbolic presence particularly meaningful to its small population.
